Born in the Netherlands in Rijswijk, John immigrated to Canada April 1st (a date he often joked about) 1954, “to get rich”. After many jobs, he went back to college in 1957 to become a priest for the Hamilton Diocese. Ordained in 1965, he left the priesthood in 1970 to work as a social worker, then in 1972 as an Administrator in different Homes for the Elderly. He was Administrator at Saint Luke’s Place in Cambridge from 1984 until his retirement in 2000.
John enjoyed his family of 6 boys. Not being a great cook, he loved to BBQ. He was also an expert in teasing his sons, daughters-in-law and grandkids. He was never afraid to give his opinion, especially at dinner where he challenged them in arguments about anything, often with the help of a nice brandy.
John is survived by his wife Nancy, sons Mark (Rina), and Kevin Kauffman, and stepsons Shea (Connie,) Christopher (Jody), Landy (Melissa), Jesse (Tamsin) Lambert. and 10 grandchildren, Rhys, Sadie, Ashwyn, Isabelle, Kinley, Parker, Maelie, Maxwell, Edison, Hadlyn, predeceased by his grandson Flynn, He is also survived by his sister Ellen (Okotocks Ab.), brothers Guus(Leny) and Wil(Lenie) (Netherlands) predeceased by his older brother Pieter (Kay) Toronto. Also remembered by numerous nieces and nephews.
